Menopause symptoms deserve treatment

Menopause is a normal life transition, but the symptoms can feel anything but normal. If you’re lying awake at 2am (again), sweating through the night, feeling more anxious or irritable than you used to, or wondering why your brain suddenly feels fuzzy, you’re not imagining it. And you’re definitely not alone. Menopause symptoms are real, common, and treatable. Menopause isn’t just about a missed period. It’s a shift in estrogen and progestrone levels that can affect sleep, mood, energy, muscles and joints, sexual health, and more.

For some women symptoms slowly creep up on them, others report menopause hitting them like a freight train. You can recognize it by the:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats

  • Sleep disruption (waking at 2am, restless sleep, insomnia)

  • Mood changes (irritability, anxiety, low mood)

  • Brain fog, forgetfulness, trouble concentrating

  • Low libido

  • Vaginal dryness or pain with sex

  • Recurrent UTIs or urinary urgency

  • Joint aches and body stiffness

  • Weight changes and changes in how your body responds to training

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

HRT is safest and most beneficial when started earlier in the menopause transition and before age 60.

For the right person, HRT can be a genuine quality-of-life upgrade. Depending on your symptoms and what’s appropriate medically, it can help alleviate:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats

  • Sleep quality (often indirectly by improving night sweats, but sometimes more broadly)

  • Mood and overall quality of life

  • Dryness and painful intercourse (local estrogen can be especially effective)

  • Bone health and reducing risk of osteoporosis-related fractures

Is HRT right for you?

HRT isn’t one-size-fits-all. The right plan depends on your symptoms, your medical history, your family history, your preferences, and your goals.

When I work with patients on menopause care at Base Camp Health, we typically walk through:

  • Your symptom pattern (what’s happening, when, and what it’s affecting)

  • Your health history and risk factors

  • Whether you still have a uterus (this changes which hormones are needed)

  • Your priorities (sleep? mood? hot flashes? sexual health? long-term bone health?)

  • Your comfort level and preferences

Sometimes HRT is the best next step. Sometimes we start with non-hormonal options. Sometimes we combine approaches. The goal is to help you make an informed decision and build a plan that fits your body and your life.

What about non-hormonal options?

HRT is a great option for many people, but it’s not the only option for menopause symptom management.

Depending on your symptoms, we may also discuss:

  • Lifestyle supports (sleep, stress, nutrition, training modifications)

  • Non-hormonal medications that can reduce hot flashes

  • Moisturizers/lubricants and targeted treatments for vaginal symptoms

  • Screening and prevention strategies for long-term health (bone, heart, metabolic health)

You deserve a plan that feels practical and doable not another list of things you should be doing.
